Spirituality and the Modern Mom

I can remember back in my early 30's looking at these wellness quizzes and numbering on a scale of 1-10 how I rank myself .

Social life, career, health, finances, relationships, physical activity, spirituality...

Spirituality always ranked a 0 because quite honestly, I had a limiting belief on what spirituality meant. I thought it meant ghosts and people in white robes chanting. I thought it meant meditating all day long. The other part of me thought it meant going to church every Sunday and knowing all the prayers and verses.

It wasn't until the straw broke the camel's back in my life, lost some of my hearing in my right ear and developed tinnitus, that I woke up and changed my view.

I got a wake up call to stop going outside myself for the answers and to start creating inner peace from within.

So what does Spirituality actually mean?

I'll tell you what it doesn't first:

1. It doesn't mean going to church every Sunday and saying your prayers (although Spiritual people can do this)

2. It doesn't mean you HAVE to do yoga and meditate (although Spiritual people can do this)

3. It doesn't mean following a specific set of rules and not dancing, having a cocktail, swearing, making mistakes, having OFF days, and being HUMAN in the modern world

4. It doesn't mean being super serious all the time and deleting fun from your life

"Being a spiritual person is synonymous with being a person whose highest priority is to be loving to yourself and others. A spiritual person cares about people, animals and the planet. A spiritual person knows that we are all One, and consciously attempts to honor this Oneness. A spiritual person is a kind person" Margaret Paul Ph.D

This definition is spot on with my beliefs.

I've seen time and time again, people go to church, say the prayers and be nothing but kind. I've seen people treat themselves like crap and be angry at the world like they are a victim but go to church while judging everyone else along the way for being different. They could use some spirituality in their lives.

I've also seen people who do yoga and meditate also be nothing but kind.

So I guess what I'm trying to prove is that it goes deeper than the labels and what we do. It starts from within. As a modern mom...we must go within!! We must put our self care first so we can be that light and love for out kids.

To me spirituality is key to a happy life. You can be religious and spiritual. You can also be spiritual and not religious...that's not anyone's business but your own, and no judgement here.

Spirituality looks different for everyone and I believe we shouldn't judge anyone's spiritual or non-spiritual path...that's not our place.

"It is up to you to define your own version of spirituality. And we do that simply by seeking it out." Chiarra Gizzi

For me it's about being a kind and loving person to the world and to myself first. It's about trusting in God and knowing that God is love. It's about knowing I'm supported. It's about gratitude, appreciation, doing the best I can to be a good human and being of service to the world to make the world better off.

It's also about being human and laughing and making fun my number one priority. It's about being mindful in the moment and learning all I can about myself and being a role model for my kids to do the same. It's about making mistakes, having off moments and learning from those times and returning to love at a faster pace.

I hope this simple explanation encourages you to look at the word and meaning of Spirituality a bit differently and maybe even begin to step into it. I hope it encourages you to create your own journey and have peace knowing that YOU get to call the shots and create your own personal version.

Lots of Light, Love and Purpose,

Kelly
